There was a time when I dreamed of becoming an artist, but my parents did their best convince me that it was unrealistic to think I could make a living as an artist. So I went to college with a plan to become a medical technologist with a grand dream to find a cure for cancer. That was in 1976.
Since then, I've adjusted my dream to simply be happy.
Science
I loved the study of biology. Whether it be the complexity of the human body, or the cultivation of plant life, the ecosystems and the magic of photosynthesis - the miracle of life intrigued me. But the dream of entering the medical research field slowly faded as I realized that I didn't want to spend the rest of my life sequestered in a lab, wearing a white lab coat. My colorful nature felt suppressed in the black and white world of science.
Business
And so, in the middle of my sophomore year, I switched my major to Business where the spirit of creativity was rewarded within the disciplines of Marketing and Advertising. After I graduated from college, I followed a dream and moved to California. It was there I took my first steps on a career path that I'd follow for decades.
I meandered through my ever-changing path of dream jobs: furniture store/design center manager, interior decorator, district sales manager in the home fashions industry, national accounts advertising executive and finally the director of advertising at a well-respected publication. All while navigating the path of motherhood with three children - 18 of those years as a single parent.
Soon after I remarried in 2009, my path took a major detour.
Art
An opportunity to move to California for my husband’s job presented itself in 2011. I saw this as an opening to leave the corporate world and create something new in my life. My colorful nature had become dulled by the black and white world of budgets and spread sheets.
I renewed my commitment to focus on being happy.
And I wanted to write a book. So I set off to California with a plan to write about my experiences of life - rich with the lessons of perseverance and preservation of dreams. I wanted to share my story to inspire other women to face adversity with grace and not to simply survive, but prevail.
But once I slipped through that opening, my path took an interesting turn.
Spirit
A chance meeting took me in a completely different direction as I embarked upon a journey to Glastonbury, England – once considered to be the mystical Isle of Avalon. While staying at the retreat center of the Chalice Well Gardens, I was introduced to the healing power of Reiki.
But it was during a rune reading with a Celtic shaman that my life was given new direction – and purpose. The bloodline of my Irish grandmother, a psychic and healer, pulsed through me with the awareness that I’d inherited those same gifts. I had been charged to embrace the gift of healing and follow a path that would forever change my life.
And that's exactly what I did.
The path of my studies, and dreams continues to evolve in new directions.
I'm still learning...and dreaming.
IT IS HERE THAT HEAVEN AND EARTH MEET AS ONE
